The iPhone 14 Pro, seven months later: is Apple still taking risks? – Frandroid

It’s been seven months since the iPhone 14 Pro entered my pocket. This ultimate representative of the Lightning line has sparked a lot of discussion thanks to its famous Dynamic Island. Let’s take stock.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

Dear readers, I have a confession to make. Although I’m a co-founder of a media company originally dedicated to Android, I’m also a longtime iPhone user. Yes, I even sacrificed my young adult book to import an iPhone from the US when it was released and spent two days jailbreaking it (the only way to use it at the time). It was an act of rebellion (before the arrival of Android) but also of pragmatism: by knowing all ecosystems well, my analyzes become more accurate, sharper and more bitter. And don’t worry, I always have an Androphone as a second phone – a Pixel 6 at the moment. And then I’m not the only one, Cassim is also succumbing to the iPhone.

In short, when the new iPhone generation appeared, I decided to embark on the iPhone 14 Pro adventure. You’re probably wondering why? Let me tell you about my humorous experience with this device that shared my life for seven months.

We take our time for the details, nuances and subtleties

The iPhone 14 Pro, this technological gem that fits in your pocket, has managed to combine a relatively compact size with a screen large enough not to spoil the user experience. After owning an iPhone 12 mini, I realized that too small a screen could be a big compromise in terms of user experience.

You know, reflecting on your experience after several months is a bit like enjoying a good wine: you take the time to appreciate the details, nuances and subtleties. Of course we can’t afford that for all smartphones, it’s humanly impossible, we test smartphones every week of the year.

These six months allowed me to explore autonomy, the quality of photos in different contexts and new software. And I have to say, while it may seem surprising, the experience was quite enjoyable. It’s true that the iPhone 14 Pro isn’t without its flaws, but the many advantages it offers are enough to tip the scales.

Dynamic island and always-on display

First, let’s talk about those famous new features that got so much ink flowing: Dynamic Island and the permanent display. You know, that floating notch at the top of the screen that seems to say, “Hey, look at me, I’m here!” “. And the live activities, these live activities where it took developers a long time to integrate the APIs. Example Uber: information about our ride is now visible at a glance, including details. That’s the theory.

In reality, I want less from my phone than wasting my time browsing apps and wondering what I’m doing there when all I wanted to do was check the weather. Luckily, the iPhone 14 Pro seems to have figured this out and has features that reduce the friction of my daily tasks.

Now let’s talk about my notifications. It used to be hell but now we can group them into summaries of the day. It’s pretty handy, although I have to admit that I still find myself flicking through everything at times.

Dynamic Island, the hotly debated topic. Was all this hype justified? Let’s face it, it’s ugly, especially when watching videos or playing games. But it works. Face ID is fast and other features like system notifications and waveforms with music are nice.

As for the always-on display, I finally decided to turn it off. At first it was poorly designed on the iPhone and after some reflection I decided to give priority to the autonomy of my smartphone instead of sticking to this feature.

The iPhone 14 Pro continues to impress with its speed and robustness, thanks to the magic of Apple’s in-house ARM chip, which does an excellent job. So far it doesn’t seem to hit any limits. Let’s hope that this extraordinary achievement will be maintained for several years to come.

However, there is one thing that weighs me down (quite literally): the weight of this phone. It’s durable and well designed, but damn it’s heavy!

In the photo it is neither bad nor very good

Ah, the iPhone 14 Pro! In a world where photography has become a less objective art than before, it’s hard to say if this camera is really good or bad. Image processing, final output, dynamic range and so many other factors go into deciding whether or not you like what a camera produces. And the iPhone 14 Pro doesn’t disappoint, at least not completely.

On the photo side, the big novelty is the 48 megapixel sensor. In reality this is mainly used for x2 zoom and x2 portrait mode (50mm equivalent). It’s practical, but the portrait mode remains perfect, especially in low light. And finally, let’s get this straight: Apple isn’t as infallible as people think it is. Samsung, Oppo and Google perform equally well or even better in some areas. It’s time to desecrate the iPhone.

Also, it’s a bit frustrating to only have a 3x telephoto lens on the iPhone 14 Pro when the competition is doing better. We want to zoom in, but it seems Apple’s software magic has its limits. Once you zoom in too far, the images become unusable.

Phew, the Lightning is doomed to go to the obsolete plug graveyard

And yes, the Lightning port is doomed to join the obsolete connector graveyard. Apple will literally be forced to adopt the USB-C standard for the iPhone thanks to a new European regulation due to come into force by the end of 2024, saying: FINALLY! It’s tiring to walk around with a USB-C cable and a Lightning cable… We’d like to have just one cable, like in a utopian world where all our problems would be solved.

Let’s hope Apple isn’t messing around with certified cables to get the best charging performance or data transfer speeds. Luckily, Europe, like a connectivity superhero, won’t let that happen.

The iPhone 14 Pro remains an exceptional smartphone

In short, the iPhone 14 Pro remains without a doubt an exceptional smartphone in 2023. But we wish Apple would shake things up a bit, because after the iPhone X the lineup doesn’t seem to have brought anything really exciting. So Apple, what are we waiting for to surprise us again and make us dream? It’s about time Apple stepped out of its comfort zone and brought something new to its loyal users.

And then why not? We want Apple to embark on the foldable smartphone adventure. With more and more sophisticated and practical models, the competition is already one step ahead. Imagine a foldable iPhone: a larger screen for apps and games while maintaining the compactness that has made the brand so successful. Finally a bit of novelty and boldness from Apple, it wouldn’t hurt!

Of course, there are always technical challenges and compromises to be made to offer a foldable smartphone, but if any company can pull it off, it’s Apple. So, dear Apple, dare to take risks, innovate and surprise us! We can’t wait to see what you can come up with in your secret labs to transform our smartphone experience and boost the industry.
