Lake Sørvágsvatn, whose name is difficult for Westerners to pronounce, impresses with its “swimming” above the ocean.

Lake Sørvágsvatn

The body of water, known for its name and beauty, is located in the Danish area of Vagar, which is part of the Faroe Islands. Located between Scotland and Iceland, the place is washed by the North Atlantic and has an area of 3.4 km².

Sørvágsvatn is part of an archipelago consisting of 18 islands. It is considered the largest lake in the region, currently home to around 47,000 people.

“Floating” above the sea

The impression we get when looking at Lake Sorvagsvatn is based on an optical illusion. This is due to the stretching of the plateau, which combined with the arrows of light, causes this view to “float” above the ocean.

The largest lake in the Faroe Islands is over 6 km long and 30 meters above sea level. This elevation offers incredible views for visitors and residents of the area.

Dispute over the name

Although it’s officially called Sørvágsvatn, locals fight over the name of the famous lake. The debate takes place because the neighbors of Sørvágur, a village of just over a thousand inhabitants, are proud of the meaning ‘Lake of Sørvágur’, a tribute to the village.

On the other hand, there are the residents of Miðvágur, also in the Faroe Islands, who continue to pursue the goal of changing the lake’s name to Leitisvatn, on the grounds that the region adjacent to the body of water is called Leiti . .

Since they have not decided to make this change to this day, the locals call the paradisiacal landscape “Vatni”, which means “the lake”.
