The Legault government will not send you a $500 check this year

The finance minister will present a cautious economic update on Tuesday.

The context of difficult negotiations with the public sector and fears of a recession forced Eric Girard to try to reduce spending.

It must be said that inflation in Quebec, at 4.8%, is well above the Canadian average, which is 3.8%.

Unlike last year, Quebecers will not receive a $500 inflation check.

Despite everything, Prime Minister François Legaut has already mentioned that he wants to continue helping citizens.

Housing, climate change adaptation and tackling homelessness will be among Mr Girard’s priorities in his economic update.

The CAQ must avoid falling into ballot measures, argued the Business Council of Canada’s first vice-president of public policy, Robert Asselin, in an interview with TVA Nouvelles.

“It would be a shame because it would be short-term politics, electoral politics, poll politics. The problem with such rather improvised help to win back voters’ favor is that it is often poorly thought out and targeted and, in retrospect, we don’t really see the desired effect,” says Mr. Asselin.

“I hope that the rational and logical side of the finance minister will prevail over the perhaps somewhat inappropriate side of the prime minister,” he added.

Minister Eric Girard’s economic update will be presented on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
