The voices of Antoine Desrochers, Catherine Brunet, Sophie Cadieux, Ludivine Reding and Julie Le Breton bring to life The Legend of the Butterflywhich also includes songs sung in particular by Patrice Michaud, Cœur de Pirate, La Zarra and Claudia Bouvette.
Patrick (voiced by Antoine Desrochers) is a young monarch butterfly who cannot fly due to a wing that is too small. However, the cook Cora (voice of Julie Le Breton) is in the process of organizing the annual migration, in which the swarm of butterflies will travel more than 5,000 km to reach Mexico. Patrick’s mother Marguerite (voice of Catherine Renaud) therefore orders her son to stay where he is. But now his best friend Martin (voice of Sophie Cadieux), a mischievous caterpillar, has an idea so that the friends can start the journey. They will hide in the spurge flowers, carried by Geneviève (voice of Catherine Brunet) and her best friend Lily (voice of Ludivine Reding) will also be part of the adventure.

We see it from the start: director Sophie Roy and screenwriters Heidi Foss and Lienne Sawatsky took care to make the butterflies attractive and cheerful with purple bodies, orange and yellow wings, and hair with blue streaks. The colorful insects blend in very nicely with the lush environments – those that are emerald green from the start to the desert that the cloud will traverse.
The visual is not the only successful element. The dialogues are amusing and dynamic… but above all the plot is pleasing. The way in which the lovable characters manage to overcome their various handicaps – especially Geneviève, who is afraid of heights – is treated with humor, finesse and empathy in the 82 minutes of “The Legend of the Butterfly”. Likewise, the obvious ecological message is integrated naturally, making the whole thing fluid and enjoyable.

First ever animated film with butterflies – yes! – and what’s more, The Legend of the Butterfly is made entirely in-house and will delight pre-adolescent children and make them aware of the importance of taking care of the fauna and flora that surrounds us.
