The life of Yevhen Nyschuk, ministerial soldier: “The theater helps me manage the trench”

by Andrea Nicastro

On Thursday he was on the stage in Kyiv, tomorrow he will return to the front: therapeutic action, says the former culture minister. I have a mate, a bank manager and an insurance manager

From our correspondent
Kyiv – A week ago he fought the Russians on the southern front near Mykolayiv. On Thursday he acted in the theater in Kyiv in the play based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque The Three Comrades. I’ll be back tomorrow. Rebel, actor, minister and soldier, Yevhen Nyschuk is a man with a thousand lives who, like so many Ukrainians, commutes to war. Twenty days in the trenches, one week vacation. And I assure you, therapeutic action. Helps manage the stress of battle. My character startles at a sound that reminds him of World War I bombs. Same thing happens to me. Now I play it very well.

She was the Maidan’s voice during the 2004 Orange Revolution. She stood on stage within range of snipers but never dismounted. Now he has volunteered. Do you like risk?

I’m afraid. My family fled to safer regions, but it is clear that this war is the continuation of that experience. the demand for democracy and freedom. I just want to act, unfortunately I didn’t choose the historical moment I live in and these things happen to me. Then they didn’t shoot me so as not to cause a scandal as I was live streaming with the whole world. That’s another challenge, in the trenches I’m everyone. It will be important to stay alive.

He was Minister of Culture for four years, couldn’t he help in any other way?

I’m lucky enough that if I look at my date of birth, they classify me as intelligent. I’m analyzing the images from the recon drones. I’m in the Hive Unit because drones come and go like bees.

Is he a really capable minister/actor?

Therefore, if I have a comrade who is a bank director and chairman of an insurance company. In the sister unit is the award-winning film director Yaroslav Pilunskyi with his cinematographers, cinematographers and so on. It took a while, but now we’re getting good at it.

The best youth.

Our commanders are young at the age of 24 or 29. Or the many who have returned from abroad to fight. Guys who don’t pretend to be better than they are, but are dedicated, study, are professionals. Well done.

Western analysts say that’s why you’re resisting.

We defend our country, of course we are motivated. On the other hand, I observe the Russians with drones. They don’t want to fight, they hide and drink like sponges. The rocket rain of the last few days is a symptom of fear.

What would they be afraid of?

What will happen at the end of the month. Ukrainian and Russian armies are born from the Soviet one. We know all about their tactics and their weapons, and they know ours. From the end of July this will no longer be the case. Western weapons will arrive and troops will be trained to use them. The situation on the ground will change dramatically. The Russians know this and try to beat civilians to put pressure on the government. But they won’t make it.

do you train too

S. The Hive will soon have American Switchblade attack drones. Meanwhile, for our engineer-soldiers, they modified the Chinese Mavik3 drones to suit the southern front. While in the battle of Kyiv between the houses the autonomy of 6 kilometers of the original drone was enough, now they have increased it to 40 in order to reach the Russian artillery in the open field.

Question to the former culture minister, what makes Ukrainians so brave?

There is a historical reason and an accidental one. Our mythology describes us as warriors and we believe it. From the Vikings of Kievan Rus’ in the 9th century to the Cossacks who served as mercenaries for Poles and Russians but whom no one could subdue. Here many soldiers cut their hair, leaving the tuft or braid in the Cossack style. Even in the Soviet Army, many officers were Ukrainians.

And the conditional reason?

The Russians attacked us in 2014 and a flood of volunteers plugged the holes in the army back then. With their contribution, Ukraine managed to resist and retake part of the Donbass. In March of this year, these veterans were the first to volunteer to fight to defend Kiev. They quit their jobs and went to the front. They already knew how to fight, and having won once, he was confident they could still pull it off.

What do you think of your fellow actor Zelensky?

He’s not exactly an actor. Anyone who works in theater or cinema has to study the character, the personality, the history, while Zelensky is more of a stand-up comedian. Less analysis and more improvisation. It is quick to react and remember.

Poll?

I am abstaining. We live in a kind of taboo where the president, the armed forces and the volunteers are unchallenged. No censorship, but sticking to the common effort. Not the case to divide us.
