The man hospitalized died after a gas explosion in Valladolid

A 57-year-old man died this Sunday in Valladolid after three weeks in hospital as a result of a gas explosion in his home. The deceased, named Diego HH, suffered second and third degree burns on 55% of his body and could not survive despite the work of health workers. The explosion that killed him occurred on August 29 on Juan de Valladolid Street and there were no other serious injuries. The death follows the one that occurred earlier this month on Goya Street in Pucelana, where a 53-year-old woman died due to a gas explosion in her home. According to the investigation, both cases are considered to be coincidental.

Diego HH’s death was confirmed in the burns unit of the Río Hortega Hospital in Valladolid, where he was admitted after treatment by health workers on August 29. A neighbor, a state police officer, rescued him from the room on the third floor of the building and gave him first aid. “I entered my neighbor’s house, almost certain he would be home because he usually is, and I found him naked and burned on his patio. He was conscious and kept telling me, “I’m dead.” He was in shock and when I touched him he complained of pain. “I had blisters and raised skin,” said the witness a few days ago in El Norte de Castilla. The agent saw that the deceased’s bed was on fire and the house was completely ablaze. Other houses on this street in the Parquesol district were also damaged, but not to the extent of devastation as this house. Up to 13 other people were injured for various reasons. The explosion could be heard in many surrounding buildings where there were many people as it occurred around six in the morning.

This deadly explosion joins the one that occurred in the same city on August 1st. Then another gas explosion, also considered an accident, caused the death of Teresa Bergondo, a tenant at 1°C Goya Street. The gas leak and subsequent explosion occurred late at night, prompting the immediate evacuation of residents of the property in the La Farola neighborhood. Firefighters found Bergondo’s body in the rubble and emergency teams had to treat 14 people with various illnesses.

Residents of the two towns affected by the explosion have not yet been able to return to their homes as they wait for the condition of the buildings’ foundations to be assessed and what to do with them. The Councilor for Social Affairs, Rodrigo Nieto (PP), explains the role of the City Council in the face of these accidents: “At Parquesol we support tenants who cannot return with rental assistance and their benefits – individual insurance.” and the community. As for Goya, we provided hotel support until last Friday, until everyone could now find each other, and we provided rental assistance to those tenants who did not have insurance.” According to the municipality, 350,000 euros were invested to help the residents of Goya to finance hotel accommodation. There is no amount yet for the rest.
