Audiences have finally gotten their first look at The Marvels, the newest project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Marvel Studios film premiered in Las Vegas on Tuesday, with press screenings also taking place in New York and Los Angeles. The first reactions are now arriving on social media before formal reviews are published on Wednesday morning.
Brie Larson, Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani and WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris star in “The Marvels,” from Candyman filmmaker Nia DaCosta and in theaters Friday. It is a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, which grossed $1.128 billion worldwide. But “The Marvels” begins in a very different landscape and doesn’t set nearly as big box office expectations.
The film had no actors available to promote it during the SAG-AFTRA strike, and Captain Marvel benefited from its direct connection to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which helped heighten the excitement. Marvel switched gears in marketing the film on Monday, releasing a last-minute trailer that reminded audiences of Captain Marvel’s connections to the Avengers and included archival footage of Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evan and Josh Brolin.

Happy to report #themarvels is a blast. It’s fun, funny and the cast is so good together. Is it one of the best Marvel films? No. But I often had a smile on my face. Definitely worth a visit to the cinema.

Nia DaCostas #TheMarvels is a joy! While the power change plot is cool, the real fun comes from the excellent chemistry between Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani. Aside from the low stakes, it features some of Marvel’s best action and comedy films to date! See it with a crowd 👀 pic.twitter.com/Qz8k9j6nAm

Everything I wanted #TheMarvels was to have a good time, and this movie is crazy fun! Kamala, Monica and Carol are so much fun together. The swapping, singing and dancing went better than I thought. The cameos, my God, the cameos! I’m so glad I saw this in IMAX! pic.twitter.com/seWhnb9fzX

#TheMarvels is pretty throughout, with a really silly plot, but still manages to be light-hearted. It’s often really funny, especially thanks to Iman Vellani – a STAR.
Fun body-swapping action that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Not great, but far from a disaster. pic.twitter.com/ammljNEvCw

Nia DaCostas #TheMarvels is a great time at the movies! It’s well paced and full of frantic, hilarious energy. I actually liked it better than 2019 #CaptainMarvel. This thing is moving! The location swapping action is a blast and the end credits scene is 😱 . I’m definitely a fan.

Although everyone on the screen did their best, #TheMarvels It feels like it lost its battle in the editing room.
The scenes don’t flow into each other and you can’t tell when the first or second act begins. There are some really cool scenes, but studio interference may be to blame.

“The Marvels” is a good MCU entry.
Carol, Kamala and Monica are really great, especially together in very creative action scenes! The first 25 minutes really rocked, exciting MCU stuff at the end.
The villain is unforgettable. VFX varies, both good and bad. Some silly scenes didn’t work. pic.twitter.com/dflCP2hOPX
