The superhero franchise has delivered one hit after another since the release of Iron Man in 2008, although recent installments have received a lukewarm critical reception. The Marvels, starring Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, also had mixed reviews and, what’s worse, only grossed $47 million in North America in its first weekend of operation.
These are the worst results in the history of the MCU. Only two other films in the 33-film series grossed less than $60 million upon release: the second MCU film, 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, which grossed $55.4 million, and Ant-Man Year 2015 with 57.2 million dollars, not taking inflation into account. The two most recent Marvel films, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, both grossed over $100 million in their release weekend.
In the rest of the world, “The Marvels” only grossed $63.3 million, for a total of $110 million, which is well below the expected worldwide box office results.
