The Maserati GranTurismo is back with many innovations under the hood

One of the most defining cars in Maserati history is back after a few years of absence. The GranTurismo coupe is reinvented mainly under the hood, with an all-new V6 engine and a 100% electric version on the menu.

This second generation, designed and manufactured entirely in Italy, was developed in Maserati’s innovation laboratory and is produced at the Mirafiori plant near Turin.

Aesthetically, it is immediately reminiscent of the original GranTurismo with its slim and muscular silhouette and characteristic details such as the triple air outlets on the front fenders or the trident logo on the rear roof pillars. Of course, the headlights and wheels have an updated look.

The two combustion models – Modena (white in the pictures) and Trofeo (in red) – are powered by a 3-liter twin-turbo V6, which replaces the old naturally aspirated V8. Their power amounts to 483 or 542 hp, controlled by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Another great novelty: The new GranTurismo has all-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive. Its system still favors the rear wheels in normal times (up to 100% of torque can be sent to them), but can provide a 50/50 split when needed for better control. Depending on the model, Maserati speaks of an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 or 3.5 seconds.

Maserati, which aims to become a 100 percent electric brand by 2030, will of course offer a battery-powered GranTurismo under the name “Folgore” (lightning bolt in Italian). This benefits from an 800-volt architecture and solutions derived from Formula E.

Its three electric motors together deliver no less than 749 hp and, according to Maserati, accelerate to 100 km/h in just 2.7 seconds. Thanks to the powerful Brembo brakes that will cool their enthusiasm! They draw their energy from a 92.5 kWh battery arranged in a “T” shape that takes up no space under the occupants, thereby significantly lowering the driving position. This battery can draw up to 270 kW from a fast charging station.

Otherwise it’s a mix of lightweight materials, fast software updates, state-of-the-art security and a new multimedia interface with a smart assistant and optional head-up display. Whether customers choose the combustion or electrification route, the audio experience is enhanced by the 1,195-watt, 19-speaker Sonus faber 3-D surround sound system.

The new Maserati GranTurismo is expected to be available on the North American market from Spring 2023, likely as a 2024 model. Canadian price is yet to be confirmed. It is followed by a new GranCabrio with a convertible top.
