“The Masked Singer” Season 7 Episode 3: Cyclops, Thingamabob exposed

SPOILERS ALERT: Don’t read any further if you haven’t seen Season 7 Episode 3 of The Masked Singer, The Double Unmasking – Round 1 Finals, which aired March 23 on Fox.

No, the unmasking we all dread still didn’t happen in week 3 of The Masked Singer, when two more celebrities left the show in a double elimination. This week left Lost and Hawaii Five-0 star Jorge Reyes, who appeared as Cyclops, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, revealed to be Thingamabob.

Reyes as Cyclops (from “Team Bad”) ended his run after a rousing performance of “Flashdance (What a Feeling)” by Irene Cara, while Mailata as Thingamabob (from “Team Cuddly”) “Classic,” by MKTO. Both were not guessed by any of the show’s panelists.

“I don’t consider myself a super great singer, but I feel like I’m pretty good at delivering a song,” Reyes said. “I’ve always loved to sing all my life. I did musicals in high school and was in the choir. And when I was in college, we threw parties and formed a band. There have been a couple of times that I’ve had the opportunity to sing for Jobs, but that hasn’t been a major focus of my creative career. But I thought it was something that would be unexpected for viewers of the show, and maybe I surprised some people!”

Reyes said the experience pushed him to sing more and keep his voice in shape just in case it’s useful for another acting gig. “I want to treat it as another part of my toolbox and have it ready when the call comes. I mean, I don’t like to see myself putting out an album or anything like that. But it might show up in a project or two.”

The Cyclops costume was not easy to maneuver, Reyes added: “This costume is huge! The head is huge. And then you get nervous and realize that all the pieces are just extra weight affecting things. And then I have to be able to move and sing. But the result was really great. I like the way Cyclops looks and it was an exciting character to bring to life.”

As for Mailata, the NFL star said he doesn’t expect a call from “The Masked Singer.”

“When my agent called me, I thought maybe he found out I was going to the Pro Bowl,” he said. “And he says, ‘I have something better.’ It took me a while to appreciate the offer because I have such tunnel vision during the season. Football came first. But after talking to my girlfriend and she relentlessly encouraged me that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I decided to do whatever it takes. And we traveled to Cali and started filming right away.”

Mailata said he’s a regular singer at home, in the car, on the show, and even at work. “It gets to the point where the guys are like, ‘We get it, you can sing!’ I just love to sing whatever song it is.”

He added that the show made him want to explore his singing even more: “Football will always come first,” he said. “That led me to this platform and paid the bills. And after the whole experience on Masked Singer, I’m thinking about it now. Do I record albums or write songs in the off-season? Because it’s a passion of mine. Do I share this passion much more than in the past? I’m still trying to figure out if I have time for it.”

For Cyclops, Robin Thicke thought it was Kevin Smith. Ken Jeong named David Batista. Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg suspected Zac Brown and Nicole Scherzinger were dating Michael Keaton.

As for Thingamabob, Thicke came the closest, choosing another NFL player, JJ Watt. McCarthy Wahlberg went with Michael Strahan. Jeong chose Liam Hemsworth. Scherzinger thought it was Dennis Rodman.

That means Firefly moves on to the Season 7 finale.

Jorge Garcia as Cyclops and Jordan Mailata as Thingamabob join the roster of unmasked celebrities, which also includes Duff Goldman as McTerrier and Joe Buck as Ram.

The Masked Singer entered its seventh season with 15 contestants, divided into The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly. This season’s costumes include THE GOOD: Ringmaster, Armadillo, McTerrier, Firefly, Frog Prince; THE BAD: Hydra, Ram, Jack in the Box, Cyclops, Queen Cobra; THE CUDDLY: Baby Mammoth, Thingamabob, Lemur, Space Bunny, Miss Teddy.

Season 7 contestants have a total of 112 movie appearances, 15 Grammy nominations, eight Emmy nominations, seven Super Bowl appearances, two Hollywood Walk of Fame stars, and two world records.

In another change, the show’s panelists don’t appear to be in contention for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impressions of each masked cast member (which McCarthy won twice, but Scherzinger won last season) this season.

James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good)” was the last Showdown song performed by Firefly, Cyclops and Thingamabob. Previous songs by Garcia as Cyclops include Creed’s “My Sacrifice” and Elvis Presley’s “Suspicious Minds”. Panelists had also guessed for him William Zabka, Danny McBride, Rob Dyrdek, Chris Pratt, John Lithgow, Rob Thomas and Dax Shepard.

Mailata as Thingamabob’s previous songs were Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”. Panelists also nominated him for Dwayne Johnson, Omar Benson Miller, Jason Momoa, James Hetfield, Chris Jericho, Terrell Owens, and Dennis Rodman.

Here’s the other contestant and their performances on the third night:

Song: “Warning” by Charlie Puth
voiceover: “I’ve never been one to shy away from the limelight. Even as a young firefly, I loved dressing up in my mother’s clothes and entertaining my imaginary audience. Then one day, my mother encouraged me to come out in front of a real crowd: my neighbors. I even charged them to watch my show. And believe it or not, it was one of those neighbors that got me my first real gig. I’ve always been a shining star. I’m not just fire, I’m fly. Showdown or not, I’ll light the stage and let my voice shine, baby!”
