The ThinkPhone from Motorola (Lenovo).
This ThinkPhone from Motorola, whose brand is owned by Lenovo, is an interesting smartphone because it allows access to Windows 365 (in the cloud) via the USB-C port connected to an external screen. Multimedia test of a device, available from around 650 francs online or 999 francs from Lenovo.
For this price, this ThinkPhone has a beautiful 6.55-inch 144Hz OLED FHD+ screen, 256GB of storage and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor supported by 8GB of RAM. Of course, we’re immediately tempted to know what it’s worth, especially since it only weighs 189 grams. Lenovo’s website. In all cases the application is smooth and pleasant
A smartphone optimized by Lenovo
In a few minutes, the AnTuTu benchmark tool will announce its verdict. This ThinkPhone scores more than 713,000 points, which gives it considerable performance, even if the best today are far ahead. We will see later that this power may limit this concentration of technologies a little.
Lenovo is targeting this product more at professional customers, ThinkPad owners or people who value security. In fact, this device is protected by the mobile version of the ThinkShied from the Chinese manufacturer and buyer of the Think range (formerly IBM). An interesting guarantee for many buildings. The red touch!
Long before the introduction of the iPhone 15, Lenovo actually offered a customizable button that you could use to launch any application. There is also the option to choose between a single or double press to increase the range of functions such as the walkie-talkie function or to use the ThinkPhone as an additional webcam.
Motorola has also taken care of the photography part, as the main photo sensor is equipped with a 50 million pixel sensor, especially to capture all the details of a “flipchart” or scan useful documents. Unless you have a lot of light, ThinkPhone recommends using standard mode.
A remarkable photo/video area
In any case, this device gives correct results in most situations, even in low light conditions, despite obvious limitations in such positioning. For example, the zoom does not exceed a factor of 8x, like other devices of a similar price range manufactured by references in the industry such as Sony or Google.
More surprisingly, the slightly geeky mobile user will find that the video mode makes it possible to produce 8K sequences at 30 frames per second and a 6x zoom, which still requires significant editing equipment. FYI: A small 10 second sequence still weighs almost 175MB. The examples below give you a good impression of the photo performance of this device.

What about Windows 365?
Apparently it was the Windows 365 test that got us excited. After connecting this smartphone to a 4K display via a USB-C HDMI adapter, I was able to use it as a computer in combination with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. This is the Lenovo (Moto Connect) version of what Samsung offers with its Dex.
One of the options allows access to Windows 365. After contacting Microsoft Switzerland, I tried to create an account. Unfortunately, the registration process didn’t work immediately. With the help of Microsoft, particularly by accepting my Revolut credit card, I finally managed to install a virtual machine

A perfectable experience
In the administration interface you must assign your license to a user in order to be able to use Windows 365 in an internet browser. Everything works fine on a MacBook Pro and in Edge after you configure your Windows in the correct language and configure the keyboard correctly.
Simply connect a display to the ThinkPhone using an HDMI-USB-C cable or an adapter to be able to start the virtual machine from your smartphone. The start is quick. We obviously find his documents and his installation. Whether on a Sony Bravia TV or a computer monitor, my experience was less than ideal.
I noticed some latency, even with a high-speed cable rated for 4K. What was even more annoying was that I couldn’t configure the keyboard in the correct language even after several attempts. After all, watching a video in the browser is not possible under good conditions.
A mixed assessment
When it’s time to take stock: while this ThinkPhone is nice enough, it seems to lack a bit of performance unless it’s necessary to use an “optimized” cable to use it with Windows 365 . It’s also a shame that the plastic protective cover can easily tear. However, the ThinkPhone’s fiber design fits perfectly in the hand and also appears very solid!
This ThinkPhone has undergone a MIL STD 810H test in aramid fibers, proving its robustness. It also has a powerful 68W charger that allows inflation at the speed of light. A quarter of an hour of charging time for a day of use and a battery life of up to 36 hours when fully charged. Not bad, right? In short: the device does what it promises, but the integration with Windows 365 seems perfect.
