What does it mean to be a Radio Canada revelation?

The careers of the six artists born in 2023-2024 will be featured throughout the year on the various Radio Canada platforms. In addition, she is entitled to creative residency days and a concert at Francos de Montréal on the stage of Pub Silo Brasseurs de Montréal.

Marilyn Leonard

Originally from South Shore, Montreal, singer-songwriter Marilyne Léonard, 21, first rose to fame during her stint with La voix in 2017. Her first album, Vie d’ange, was released in 2022 on the Audiogram label.

The young artist offers melodic indie pop music that flaunts her guitar and also draws on electronic parts, alternating between rapped verses and catchy choruses. She is already on the musical radar in Quebec and Europe through her collaborations with Clay and Friends, Ariane Moffatt, Qualité Motel and Jay Scott, having already performed four times in France.

Three words to describe your music

Casual, catchy and authentic.

Three sources of inspiration

Hubert Lenoir’s latest album, stories and human relationships, the Beastie Boys.

Three wishes for the future

Finding the musical direction for my second album, being able to be satisfied with my work (I’m a very perfectionist), living in the moment and enjoying the little moments.

parazar

A finalist at the Francoouvertes that year, Parazar had a penchant for humor before accidentally turning to rap – hence his nickname. The artist stood out on the show La fin des Schwaches before releasing a first micro-album, C’est live, in 2021.

Parazar’s sound has its roots in rap and is peppered with sounds of raï, an Algerian pop music that recalls its origins. The rapper recently signed to Montreal label Bravo and is working on new songs.

Three words to describe your music

Versatile, rap and oriental, because there are many sounds of the Algerian Raï (Algerian folk song) that can be found in the instruments, in the words and in the flow (phrasing) of my music.

Three sources of inspiration

Joseph Sarenhes

Wendat and Guinean multi-instrumentalist from the Huron-Wendat nation of Wendake, Joseph Sarenhes is a versatile artist, proficient on the piano, guitar and drums. He is also a singer, rapper, songwriter and dancer.

His childhood was shaped by the culture and rhythms of West Africa before he fell in love with hip-hop. In 2021 he released his first micro album in English and Spanish, Pride & Chains, representing the cocktail of influences that shaped his musical education.

Three words to describe your music

Origins because my music is really rooted in indigenous and African traditions. Power, because I have a very vehement style of music. Versatility.

Three sources of inspiration

Michael Jackson. The traditional West African rhythms called Mandingo rhythms, which are a collection of forty extremely codified rhythms that I have learned and that I now integrate at the level of melodies and rhythms. the blues

Three wishes for the future

I want those who came before me in my communities, whether in the arts or otherwise, to be proud of what I bring to the table. I want future generations to see me as a symbol of pride. I want to humbly conquer the world as an artist: play on the biggest stages, collaborate with the biggest artists and seize the opportunity to share my message. And I am sure that I will make it.

Wahli

Waahli has been active in the Montreal group Nomadic Massive since the mid-2000s and has been fine-tuning his solo project for a number of years. He has already expressed his Caribbean Afro-rap, which mixes French, Haitian Creole and English, on three tracks including his second album Soap Box, due out in 2022.

This versatile artist has taken his danceable instrumentals to every corner of Canada, the United States and Europe. Parallel to his musical career, he runs writing workshops in schools and, as the titles of his albums suggest, makes soap.

Remi Cormier

Just two years after leaving the University of Montreal, where he earned a master’s degree in interpretation and jazz composition, trumpeter Rémi Cormier released Glimpse in 2023, a debut album featuring a sextet.

The recording shows the virtuosity of the musician, who has already distinguished himself on the international stage. He loves cinema music and enjoys the mix of genres and cultures reminiscent of the sounds of Tigran Hamasyan and Avishai Cohen.

Three words to describe your music

Generous, passionate and sensitive.

Three sources of inspiration

My region, the Saguenay. I’m from Chicoutimi and it’s a beautiful region full of nature, rich in landscapes, rich in water, space, air and cool places.

Then there would be a very important person in my life that I met once, it’s Yannick Nézet-Séguin. I did a master class with him in 2020. I think he’s a successful artist, but it’s very important for him to stay humble, stay grounded in his successes, his failures, but also on the journey.

My friends. My god I have so many musician and artist friends who inspire me! They are consummate artists unlike me and they inspire me a lot in my art.

Three wishes for the future

vocal health. It is very important to me that things continue to go well technically and that my voice works well. More travel. Continue to be able to deliver high quality music.
