The mysterious letter from Elizabeth II that can only be opened in 2085 Mega Curious

There is at least one rather mysterious fact surrounding the life of Queen Elizabeth II: She left a secret letter with a message for residents of Sydney, Australia. Only the monarch knows what is in this letter. And the strangest thing is that it won’t be open for another 63 years.

The Queen wrote this letter more than 30 years ago, in 1986, to commemorate the restoration of the Queen Victoria Building in Sydney. As the name of the building suggests, the building is a tribute to Queen Victoria, Elizabeth’s greatgrandmother, and was built in 1898.

The history of the building

The Queen Victoria building has an interesting history. This is because there were plans to demolish it in the 1950s, but Sydney residents spoke up and organized campaigns to preserve it. It is said that Queen Elizabeth II was very pleased with the preservation of the building (which now serves as a shopping mall) and decided to write a letter to commemorate it.

The mysterious letter was addressed to the Mayor of Sydney and is being held in a safe in this building. And why can’t it be opened in the near future? Nobody knows for sure that’s why this letter still fascinates people.

The hypotheses about the letter

Although not much is known about the mystery of the letter, there are of course many theories. One of them is pretty obvious: that it would be a simple thank you from the Queen to the townsfolk who tried (and managed) to save the building. The building was threatened with demolition as a parking lot.

But why can the letter only be opened in 2085, ie in 63 years? There is another hypothesis about this. The building was maintained under a 99year lease with a Malaysian company. This treaty expires in 2085. It is therefore a very likely guess that the Queen asked for the contract to be renewed in this letter and therefore intended to work together to ensure that the building stood after that time.

In addition, the letter includes specific instructions for the Sydney Mayor, whoever he will be this year. The front of the envelope reads: “On an appropriate day of your choosing in the year 2085 AD, please open this envelope and convey my message to the people of Sydney.” Finally she signs as “Elizabeth R.” (The R stands for “regina”, a Latin word for “queen”).

And why should she be interested in a building in Australia? It is worth remembering that the country is part of the Commonwealth, the community made up of 53 independent nations that were part of the British Empire. Because of this, Elizabeth II was considered Australia’s head of state a role now passed to her son Charles III. was transferred.

During her reign, Elizabeth II made 16 trips to Australia. The last took place in 2011.
