Defenseman Jeff Petry may only last one season at Pittsburgh as his name has been tied to rumors of guard Erik Karlsson moving to the Penguins.
It’s no secret that the San Jose Sharks are looking to trade off the man who just won his third James Norris trophy. According to many, including Sportsnet network hockey pundit Elliotte Friedman, the Pennsylvania organization would be keen to take on the 33-year-old Swede.
Journalist Frank Seravalli is one of those who raised the possibility that Petry was one of the people sent to California to take over Karlsson. The Hockey News even envisioned a deal with the Nashville Predators in which that club would keep a portion of the 35-year-old American’s salary. A first-round pick was also mentioned.
The former Montreal Canadiens had five goals in 2022–2023 and provided 26 assists for 31 points in 61 games. In July 2022, the Penguins acquired CH along with forward Ryan Poehling in exchange for defenseman Mike Matheson and a fourth-round pick in the 2023 draft.
Petry has a contract through the end of the 2024-2025 season and will receive an annual salary of $6.25 million. He was offered the four-year contract by Marc Bergevin in September 2020.
