The new chips Apple M2 was already expected during the “Peek Performance” keynote organized in March 2022. But the American company seems to have decided otherwise and only the M1 Ultra processor was present. This time the SoC M2 would have passed tests on MacBooks.

MacBooks with Apple M2 chips

Apple’s M2 chip will be the successor to the current M1. According to the company, it would offer high performance. These new processors were reportedly seen on MacBooks in the company’s tests.

The information was leaked from the developer logs of third-party apps from the App Store. Thus, nine (9) MacBooks would have chosen a variant of the processor during the tests. This allowed it to have some of the latter’s abilities.

Among the observed devices we find a MacBook Air (codename J413) with an M2 with an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. As a reminder: The current chip only has 8 cores for its graphics part.

Two Mac minis have also reportedly been spotted, one with the M2 (J473) SoC and the other with an M2 Pro (J474). Also in testing are the 13-inch (J493), 14-inch (J414), and 16-inch (J416) MacBook Pros. The first carries an M2, the second and third each come with an M2 Pro or M2 Max. This latest SoC would have 12 CPU cores and 38 GPU cores. The Apple Mac Pro completes the list.

A launch during WWDC22?

During the Apple Peek Performance, many were already expecting an announcement about the new M2 chip from the Cupertino company. It seemed logical after the numerous leaks. But eventually the M1 Ultra and the Mac Studio came out.

However, these testing phases point to an upcoming announcement on M2. Apple is preparing four variants of its new chip: the base M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max and probably the M2 Ultra. Among those elements, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, it might not all come out.

Expert forecasts point to an announcement within the next few months. As a reminder, WWDC22 takes place in June. This conference for developers could well be an opportunity to get to know the successor to the M1.

Conclusion

Apple released the M1 Ultra during the Peek Performance, an overpowered processor. Expectations for the M2s are therefore high and we can’t wait to see what the company has in store for us.
