The Republican councilwoman from New Jersey, who was “shot in the face” while driving her SUV home, was seen talking to a man before the shooting.
Eunice Dwumfour, 30, was shot dead outside her home in Sayreville, New Jersey, on Wednesday night. Friends called it a “targeted and personal attack”.
She crashed into her SUV as she slumped over the steering wheel, and horrified neighbors heard multiple gunshots and then an accident.
While reports initially indicated she had been shot seven times, law enforcement sources told NBC New York that as many as 14 were fired.
Some neighbors also told the broadcaster they saw Dwumfour talking to a man outside their car on security footage just before the shooting.
The Middlesex County Attorney’s Office and the Sayreville Police Department are leading the investigation, with the FBI now becoming “involved” in the investigation.

Sayreville Police said in a news release Thursday that they are asking anyone with footage, including surveillance, to come forward.
Dwumfour’s husband Eze Kings posted on Facebook about the loss of his new bride.

He accompanied the post with several photos of the couple’s wedding, which Dwumfour celebrated in an Instagram post on Dec. 7 celebrating being “officially Mrs. Kings.”
Just five days ago, Kings wrote in a Facebook post: “LIFE START AFTER MARRIAGE”.

Dwumfour was found in her white Nissan SUV with multiple gunshot wounds at Samuel Circle just before 7.30pm.
She recently married a pastor who lives in Nigeria just before Thanksgiving and lived in the apartment with her 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
Friend and pastor Nelia Rodriguez told The Ingraham Angle that she believes the incident was a “personal attack”.
She added: “We believe it [was] very personal because she was shot seven times in the face and another seven shots went everywhere else.
“For someone to get that close and shoot that many times, it has to be personal.”
The Middlesex County Attorney’s Office said the investigation into Dwumfour’s death was ongoing and officers had not released a motive or information about a suspect.
No one was arrested in the case. Officers were seen searching a wooded area near their home after witnesses claimed to have seen a man running away in that direction after the shooting.
Police received a tip that the murder weapon had been dumped in the area and brought in police dogs to search the area.

She ousted the incumbent Democrat in Sayreville County with a surprise election victory in November 2021 and did not stand for re-election until 2024.
A friend told that she and her family had just returned from a church trip in Nigeria and described her as “bubbly and kind”.
Family members told USA Today that she lived on the property with her 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
Her sister Priscilla said: “She was always happy, very humble and respectful.”
Friends of the councilwoman hailed her as an “amazing friend” who “loved God.”

Dwumfour was a Certified Business Analyst and Scrum Professional for Fire Congress Fellowship inc. and a part-time EMT.
She graduated from William Paterson University and served as church director for the Nigeria-based Champions Royal Assembly.
In a statement, Sayreville Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said: “The community is shocked and saddened by the loss of Eunice Dwumfour, who was a dedicated member of our Borough Council who was genuinely committed to serving all of our residents.
“The fact that she was taken from us through a heinous crime makes this incident all the more chilling.”

The mayor said she believes law enforcement will “bring this fast-moving investigation to a speedy and successful conclusion and look forward to the identification, arrest and successful prosecution of the individual responsible.”
Sayreville Republican Chairwoman Karen Bailey Bebert added, “We remember Eunice as she lived, not as she died.
“She was the embodiment of Sayreville, living the American Dream and overcoming challenges with determination and a smile.
“And always giving others time and love. She played Sayreville and will be missed terribly by all who were lucky enough to know her.’
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy added that he was “stunned” by her murder and branded it an “act of gun violence.”
He told WNYC that “little is known” about the motivation for the incident, which “appears unrelated to her potion as an elected councilwoman in Sayreville.”
