The Nissan Z 2023 in the test: a pleasure that survives changes. The new Z offers a dynamic driving experience… and is relatively affordable – Auto123

• Auto123 tests the 2023 Nissan Z.

The Nissan Z has been an icon of affordable sports cars for nearly 50 years. The Datsun 240Z was introduced in October 1969 and has been attracting the interest of motorsport enthusiasts ever since. The new generation of the Z continues this legacy. Powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine, it offers modern retro styling, solid performance and an immersive driving experience, reviving the timeless spirit of the Z.

Nissan Z 2023: What’s new?

The next-generation 2023 Nissan Z combines retro styling cues with modern technological advances. In response to the growing expectations of sports car enthusiasts, this version features a 400 hp V6 turbo engine, available with a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission. A Nismo version is being prepared for 2024.

The interior has undergone a modernization which was welcome. The infotainment system has been updated and the configurable digital display for important driver information is new. These are clear improvements, but we are still far from what the competition can offer in terms of technology and modernity.

Nissan Z 2023: versions and prices

As for the different versions available, the 2023 Nissan Z offers a diverse selection:

Z Sport: Starting at $46,498 – This base version offers a generous 400 horsepower engine and a manual transmission. At this price you get the essentials of the Z. That is, the performance, the sound of the excellent exhaust and, above all, the driving pleasure. It represents a barrier-free entry into the world of Z.

Z Performance: Starting at $58,498 – For performance enthusiasts, the Z Performance version offers upgraded features such as a sports suspension, limited-slip differential and upgraded brakes. The 19-inch rims with summer tires increase traction and ensure a sportier driving experience.

These two versions are available with manual or automatic transmission depending on your preference. Last year we had the opportunity to drive the Z with the automatic transmission, and this year it was the manual transmission. For once we had a great preference for the automatic transmission. The manual, in turn, requires the driver to always take half a second to make sure the next gear is engaged before turning it off.

Competitors of the 2023 Nissan Z

The 2023 Nissan Z competes directly with models like the Toyota Supra and offers an attractive alternative for sports car enthusiasts. Other potential competitors include the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro, which also share a passion for performance and style.

Shortly after our week with the Z, we also got behind the wheel of a BMW Z4. The two cars offer the same driving pleasure with the same performance. The two V6 engines, one with 380 hp and the other with 400 hp (in drive mode), allow you to make the rear end dance to your liking. The only real difference is the price. The Z is available for just $46,498, while the Z4 with the M40i engine requires signing a nice check for over $83,000.

Which version should I choose?
Looking at the balance between performance and features, the Z Performance version seems to offer the best value for money. With its improvements to suspension, braking and traction, it offers a more dynamic driving experience without sacrificing comfort. This version is aimed at drivers looking for an optimal combination of performance and comfort.
