The death toll in clashes in Juliaca, southern Peru, between police and anti-government protesters has risen to at least 17 dead and around 30 injured. This was announced by the people’s defender. The victims had gunshot wounds, said an official at Carlos Monge Hospital in Juliaca, where they were taken. Clashes erupted as protesters demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte attempted to enter the city’s airport, located about 1,300 km south of Lima in the Puno region. This airport had already been the victim of an attempted attack on Saturday.
