Cuba reported this Saturday 957 cases of COVID-19 – the highest number of the week – while the public opinion indicates a decrease in risk perception in the face of the disease that has caused the death of 8 509 people on the island since March 2020 .
This was warned by Politburo member and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz at the meeting of the government working group to combat the pandemic, chaired from the Palace of the Revolution by the First Secretary of the party’s Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez.
According to the head of government, some opinions are increasing that the perception of risk is falling, and others are related to the fact that the authorities at the various levels of management are paying more attention to the economic and social activities of the territories. than to confront the epidemic itself.
I repeat, he said, that we need to keep established protocols and that risk perception needs to be increased. We must continue to control the confrontation while advancing the country’s economic and social activities, Marrero Cruz warned.
In the last 14 days, Health Minister José Angel Portal Miranda reported that 10,035 positive cases had been diagnosed. During this period, the highest incidence was concentrated in the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Mayabeque, Las Tunas, Holguín and Matanzas.
The 957 cases reported this Saturday represent a 14% increase from the previous day. Wealth is also growing: 3,780 patients with SARS-CoV-2 remain in the hospital, 75% at home.
In the intensive care units, six people are being treated in critical condition and 21 are classified as serious. A deceased from Guantánamo province, 89 years old, mourned during the day.
Portal Miranda pointed out that the lethality in the country had continued to decrease as a result of the epidemic. In the current year, 86 people have died, with a mortality rate of 0.16%. This indicator stood at 0.09% in March.
Regarding the vaccination process in Cuba, the minister explained that 95.6% of vaccination with a complete schedule of the vaccinable population is at 95.6%, while the booster dose is at 76.1%.
Regarding these problems, Marrero Cruz asked MINSAP to coordinate better with the health sectors for the vaccination of children who turn two years old, as well as young people who turn 19, who have indicated the reinforcement.
By video conference, the authorities of all provinces and the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud informed the country’s leadership about the epidemiological situation of each territory: new cases, active cases, deaths, vaccinations and other indicators. President Díaz-Canel particularly alarmed the governor of Ciego de Ávila, as the province adds five days with more than 100 positive results per day, and that of Camagüey, which increased by 40 new patients overnight.
