To write history, you have to achieve great things, and that has to be aimed Alliance of Lima in the Libertadores Cup. The group stage draw did not bode well for the initiates as they had the worst of everything: against two Brazilian sides (Atlético Paranaense and Atlético Mineiro) and one Paraguayan (Libertad). Without a doubt, Alianza Lima’s strongest rivals are Paranaense and Mineiro, teams that have won the Libertadores on previous occasions. They have a much bigger budget than the Victorians and their goal is to win titles outside of their country.
However, in their entire history, the Victorians have not achieved good results against rivals from Brasileirao in the Copa Libertadores and they have only twice won against teams from the country of Rio de Janeiro.
The unforgettable first time: with Manuel Earl and Juan Reynoso victory against Guaraní
In the 1988 edition of the Copa Libertadores, Alianza Lima shared a group with the Universitario de Deportes, Sport Recife and Guaraní. These last two were clubs from Brazil. The Familiar has only managed one win, against the latter team.
The authors of the goals in this game were Juan Reynoso and midfielder Manuel Earl in the duel that took place in Matute. The Victorians finished bottom with three units thanks to that win and a draw against the Creams. Previously, two points were awarded for a win and one unit for a tie.

Waldir Sáenz, the historic goalscorer who scored for Cruzeiro who became champions
The second and last time Alianza Lima smiled in front of a Brazilian side was in the 1997 Copa Libertadores, in which the blue and white were led by Jorge Luis Pinto.
Notables from this team included Waldir Sáenz (the club’s all-time goalscorer), Marco Valencia, Francisco “Pancho” Pizarro and Juan Carlos Bazalar, among others. ‘Wally’ was the hero of that night as he made a memorable run past goalkeeper Dida and left footed to seal the 1-0 win.
