The Tories (Conservatives) had crowned Rishi Sunak prime minister without him saying he intended to lead the country and without anyone being able to vote, Labor Party second leader Angela Rayner claimed on Twitter .
The MP stressed that Sunak, the only candidate nominated by the Conservative faction to replace Truss, “has no mandate, has no idea what the working class needs”.
We need a general election so the public can decide the future of the UK, Rayner said.
For his part, Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey pointed out that the only way to end the “chaos” is to bring forward the elections scheduled for late 2024.
Now we will see more of it. Conservative MPs plan and fight each other, ignoring the enormous challenges the country faces, Davey said.
The Scottish National Party (SNP) also expressed its dissatisfaction with its leader of the House of Commons, Ian Blackford, who said he would support Labor if they tabled a motion of no confidence in the new Conservative government.
The Tories must not be allowed to install a third prime minister without a general election. Voters have the right to decide, and the SNP is determined to guarantee that, he noted.
Sunak, a 42-year-old former banker of Indian descent, won Monday’s internal leadership contest to replace Truss unopposed after his only rival, Conservative faction leader Penny Mordaunt, withdrew her candidacy at the last minute.
Truss, who replaced Boris Johnson, who also resigned, on September 6 after beating Sunak in internal elections a month earlier, was forced to resign last Thursday following the financial chaos caused by his erratic economic policies.
However, analysts rule out that the Conservatives would agree to bringing the general election forward because polls show Labor has an advantage of up to 30 percentage points in voting intent.
