If China is slowly realizing its intention to dominate the Indo-Pacific thanks to Russia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine, the Aukus Pact is the Western Front’s countermeasure to prevent it. This is the historic partnership signed in San Diego by Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, which establishes the cooperation of the submarine fleets of the three powers in patrolling the two oceans: the Pacific and the Atlantic. The agreement, which was signed by Joe Biden and the two British and Australian Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak and Anthony Albanese in March, will now change in detail but not in substance.

What details are we talking about? According to InsideOver magazine, the original plan to build all eight submarines on the Pacific island contained a fundamental misunderstanding that later led to a change of plan. In fact, the governments in Canberra, which had since changed, had declared their willingness to purchase eight submarines without ever specifying their possible construction on Australian territory. Green Senator David Shoebridge argued, as the Guardian reported, that the only promise Australia could keep is to create just three nuclear submarines. Ergo, at least three and up to five of the eight Virginia-class submarines will be from the United States. As for the submarines’ characteristics, the new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, described the SSN-Aukus as “a new nuclear-powered, conventionally-armed submarine based on a British design, combining Australian, British and US technologies”.

As mentioned earlier, if the chord has changed in the manufacturing process, the end goal remains the same. The $368 billion trilateral Aukus Pact between London, Washington and Canberra, which would provide the alliance with a fleet of eight nuclear-powered submarines by 2050, remains one of the key projects in curbing China’s expansionist ambitions, according to Xi Jinping, which is becoming increasingly popular more inspire more fear.
