The Palestinian flag flew on the field as Morocco celebrated historic World Cup victory

CNN —

Several players from the Moroccan national team unfurled a Palestinian flag on the pitch on Tuesday as they celebrated their historic World Cup win over Spain in Qatar.

After a dramatic penalty shoot-out, Morocco became the first Arab team to reach the quarter-finals of a World Cup.

This is the second time Moroccan players have raised the Palestinian flag after winning a game. Morocco’s Jawad El Yamiq hoisted the Palestinian flag as he celebrated his country’s 2-1 win over Canada last week.

Moroccan football fans were also seen waving a “Free Palestine” banner during the North African country’s 2-0 win over Belgium in Group E earlier in the tournament.

Regulations of the global football governing body FIFA prohibit the use of banners, flags and flyers that are deemed political, offensive and/or discriminatory.

“The promotion or announcement of any political or religious message or any other political or religious activity in the stadium or in the immediate vicinity of the stadium in any manner whatsoever before, during or after the matches is strictly prohibited,” read the FIFA Regulations.

Football authorities have occasionally issued fines for displaying the Palestinian flag on the ground.

The flag move was celebrated by Arabs on social media as users from Libya, Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia celebrated the Moroccan victory.

Videos on social media also show Palestinians celebrating Morocco’s victory on the streets of several West Bank and Gaza cities.
