The Zappe-mania has been wild in recent weeks after the fourth-round draft pick nearly brought down Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field before leading the Patriots to back-to-back wins over the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns .
In fact, the offense is playing so much better that some have even speculated that there is a legitimate quarterback controversy in New England. Could Zappe really oust Jones as a starter after playing just three games?
No, that’s not happening, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe.
Zappe’s sample size is not large enough to remove Jones as a starter.
Granted, it wasn’t exactly a smooth start for the signal-caller sophomore, but he’s coming off a Pro Bowl season in a year that made him look like a future franchise quarterback on the rise.
The loss of Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator, along with shaky offensive play and a mixed coaching staff all contributed to those struggles. With the offensive line playing better and Matt Patricia handling offensive play calls better, the sky really is the limit for Jones under center.
