The pinnacle of tango arrives in Montreal

Some of Argentina’s best tango dancers and musicians will come to captivate Montrealers with their expertise on Friday, October 20th.

“You can expect to fall in love with tango,” explained the show’s general director, Pascual Bustos, when speaking to QMI Agency about tango.

Specifically, Latin American dance lovers gathering at the Maisonneuve Theater will be treated to an ode to tango in a two-part performance led by six great Argentine dancers and five musicians.

“We try to take a short journey into the history of tango between its origins and contemporary tango,” concluded Mr. Bustos, distinguishing between traditional Argentine tango and the more contemporary tango influenced by jazz and classical music.

Place for young people

The show’s director – Gerardo Sanchez in his everyday life – has been a true monument to the world of Montreal tango for more than 30 years and finds that Montrealers and Quebecers have more appetite than ever for Latin American dances.

Mr. Sanchez notices this enthusiasm both in classes, such as those he offers at his Free Tango school, and at outdoor events where people gather in the summer to learn the basics of Latin American dances.

“[L’émission] Revolution also helps spread this interest in dance. “It is an interest that is still important,” says the man, who remembers that some have predicted the death of tango since its beginnings, more than 150 years ago.

On the contrary, dance is experiencing a new boom today. “25 or 30 years ago it was mostly older people who came to the courses. Now there are more young people. […] A change will take place and the dance will evolve,” says Gerardo Sanchez.

Tangology will be performed at the Maisonneuve Theater on Friday October 20th at 8 p.m. For information: https://placedesarts.com/fr/evenement/tangologie
