The plenary session of the Ecuadorian legislature will decide on the impeachment of Lasso

After the Constitutional Court gave the go-ahead to move forward with the process, Assembly Vice-President Darwin Pereira stated that the process would now formally go through the Legislative Administration Council (CAL) and from there to the Control Commission.

This group of assembly members would have to prioritize the analysis of this case over other matters and they would have to submit a report within 30 non-renewable days, Pereira clarified.

Lawmaker Pedro Velazco, a member of the Oversight Commission, claimed that the political process would be decided in plenary, regardless of whether the document proposed prosecuting the chief executive or not.

The Commission has no power to initiate a political process against a President of the Republic, and the report must necessarily be presented to the plenary session of the Assembly, where the ruler’s future will be decided.

Fernando Villavicencio, also a member of parliament, president of the legislative group that will be handling the case, in statements to the press pointed out the existence of a legal vacuum in the event that the report does not have the support of the majority of the commission.

However, Bruno Segovia, another member of this legislative table, preferred not to put forward any criteria as it would be harmful, and assured that there is no reason for the impeachment proceedings against Lasso to stagnate and not reach the plenary.

The Constitutional Court of Ecuador last night gave the green light to a motion to prosecute Lasso only for the crime of embezzlement (embezzlement).

The ruler reached this point after the corruption scandal in public companies in the energy sector, in which his brother-in-law Danilo Carrera was said to be involved, and the president apparently knew about it but did nothing about it.

Lasso’s early resignation from power would need the support of 92 of the 137 MPs, and if successful, Vice President Alfredo Borrero would take over for the remainder of the current term.
