BUENOS AIRES, 4th November (RHC) Delegates from 14 countries will attend a Plurinational Assembly in Argentina to officially establish Runasur, an organization promoting unity among indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants, labor unions and Latin American popular movements, organizers reported on this Friday.

The appointment, which begins this Saturday at 08:30 local time in Buenos Aires, will include the participation of former Bolivian President Evo Morales and will last until Sunday when a final statement will be made.

Runasur is the compound of the word runa (man in Quechua) and unasur (union of South American nations) and aims to be an integration mechanism by and for the peoples.

At a press conference, Secretary General of Argentina’s State Workers’ Union, Hugo Godoy, stressed the importance of building a multinational America that respects the rights of women, farmers, indigenous peoples and workers.

Runasur will help strengthen unity, ties between nations and democracy in the region so that it is not the backyard of any power but a land of justice, he said.

For his part, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia and coordinator of this organization, Fernando Huanacuni, assured that it is a mechanism to liberate the peoples from the political, ideological and cultural system that capitalism has imposed, chasing after Mother Earth plunders the resources and natural riches.

I hope that this meeting will unite us deeply. Runasur emerges from the struggle and memory of social and indigenous movements at a defining moment for the region. Today we live in times of change, we are beginning a new phase in which it is necessary to articulate our actions, he added.

He also urged defending people’s democracies, reclaiming identity and dignity, and developing regional strategies.

In turn, the head of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores de Chile, Ramón Chanqueo, claimed that integration was possible in order to fight for independence, reclaim the economy and food sovereignty in the face of imperialist attempts to usurp Latin American resources. (font: Latin Press).
