The Quebec Remparts established their dominance of the entire Canadian Hockey League by winning the Memorial Cup, to the delight of their many fans, even in Ottawa.
During statements by MPs on Tuesday, Louis-Saint-Laurent representative-elect Gérard Deltell congratulated the Red Devils and even pushed for the song to pay tribute to them.
Dressed in a jersey in the team’s colors, the Conservative MP sang the tune “Sie sind Gold, Sie sind Gold,” the anthem devised by former organist Jean-Yves Hamel to celebrate winning the 1971 Memorial Cup .
“We won it in 2006. We won it in 1971 with the Golden Ramparts and half a century later we can say that the flame of victory burns more than ever,” said Mr. Deltell before beginning his song.
The celebration was well received by the rest of the gathering, applauding the proud supporter of the Remparts.
Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Patrick Roy’s men defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-0 in Sunday’s Memorial Cup Finals.
