The former The Project star announces a surprise new career move – after Peter Helliar, Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson all left the show

A former The Project star is moving towards big things.

Charlie Pickering, who left the current show in 2014, will host his own radio show on ABC.

The comedian will headline a new breakfast show every Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., Media Weekly reported on Friday.

“Most of my childhood was 774 on the radio. It’s the soundtrack to life in Melbourne,” said the 45-year-old about his new appearance.

“Now that I’m an adult, I’m honored to be a part of it. Though I promise not to be too grown up.’

Pickering abruptly left Channel 10’s The Project to join ABC in 2014 because he felt working for the commercial network compromised his moral values.

In 2015, he transitioned to his own show, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, as well as the annual special The Yearly with Charlie Pickering.

It comes as The Project faces a mass exodus after losing three of its biggest stars in recent months.

Last month Peter Helliar announced he was leaving Channel Ten’s current affairs program after his co-hosts Carrie Bickmore and Lisa Wilkinson left.

“Carrie, you recently said that you’re glad to be leaving The Project, even though you still love it and I still love the show. I really do,’ he explained.

Peter also said he’s looking forward to moving into “new areas” in the new year and doesn’t want to be “a creative guy who leaves meetings to go to another meeting.”

Carrie announced her departure in October, Lisa announced the following month.
