PORT-AU-PRINCE, 9th August (RHC) – The Protestant Federation of Haiti announced on Tuesday its withdrawal from the Montana Accords, a civil society consensus to seek solutions to the political crisis outside the current government.

According to the religious argument, the nation needs a broader agreement with all actors involved in the crisis to save the country.

In addition, they expressed concern about the delay in achieving Montana’s main objective, which is to ensure harmonization between the protagonists of the crisis at a time when the living conditions of the population are becoming increasingly difficult.

Likewise, they encouraged the signatories to work together with their peers to improve the fate of the common fatherland. The statement comes after the coordinators of the Montana Accords announced the suspension of negotiations with the executive branch and assured that the administration has no real desire to move forward in dialogue.

“The state is an obstacle to solving the political crisis. The state is an obstacle to the renewal of the political system, which is a necessary condition for elections and wealth creation,” they said in a statement last week.

In parallel, the government’s allies are also experiencing an internal crisis after a fringe of the Democratic and popular sector, led by former Senator Nenel Cassy, announced its withdrawal from Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s consensus.

Political forces failed to reach consensus after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse last year, as the country descends into a spiral of violence that has seen the emergence of armed gangs operating with complete impunity.

More than 500 deaths have been recorded since April as a result of violent clashes between gangs, while food insecurity and rampant migration rise.

Experts agree that the country needs political stability to deal with its fundamental problems, are considering elections and a process of democratization, but the long-awaited agreement is a long time coming. (font: Latin Press).
