It was with great joy that Gabriel Perreault heard his name pronounced by the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. The young Quebecer had to wait a little longer than expected, but it was worth the wait.
Several observers were dissatisfied to see the Sherbrooke native fail to find a taker after the first 20 decisions. Perreault set a record for the American development program with 132 points in 63 games, but his 165-pound weight may have put some off.

In the 23rd round of speeches, however, the blue shirts did not hesitate for long, to the delight of the rector concerned.
“There is nothing better,” the attacker told the French National League website. One of the six original teams, it’s really “cool”. I think of Madison Square Garden and it really is something special.
In an interview with the New York Post, Rangers chief scout John Lilley said Perreault was the top player available at the time of the draft.
“It’s his sense of hockey. “I think he’s an elite player at this level,” he assured. He thinks one step ahead of the game. He has very good stick handling, excellent vision and a good shot. It poses a double threat. He can pass, he can shoot. He can score goals. He generally stood out for his talent.
An extraordinary trio
Before Perreault was called onto the stage by Rangers, his linemates Will Smith and Ryan Leonard had both been selected ahead of him. They headed for San Jose (4th) and Washington (8th) respectively.
“We all offered something different,” Perreault told NHL.com. These guys are very special. Will is probably the most skilled player in this class and Ryan is noticeable in all aspects of the game. Playing with these two is pretty easy.
“He’s had an incredible season,” Lilley replied of the Quebecer. Yes, the team was particularly talented offensively. He had some good linemates and in every game one of those guys was the lead.”
Gabriel, the youngest son of Yanic Perreault, is hoping to reach the National League in two years. His brother Jacob, who was drafted first round by the Anaheim Ducks in 2020, made his Bettman Tour debut in 2021-22.
