The ravages of steroids: a real “descent into hell” that killed his brother

Louis-Philippe Nadeau’s obsessive stubbornness to aim ever higher in the world of bodybuilding led him to start consuming steroids that overwhelmed his heart when he was less than 22 years old.

“For me it was a shock. But my parents never really got over it. There was a before and after for them,” Jasmin Nadeau told the Journal.

On the morning of May 15, 2013, his little brother Louis-Philippe returned from the gym, visibly battered and ill. Little did she know that these were her final moments, and her then roommate left her Montreal apartment for the afternoon.

On her return, she discovered the young man’s body, lifeless, on the floor of the shelter. He succumbed to acute coronary thrombosis two weeks before his 22nd birthday when he had no cardiac history.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END

According to his brother, his “descent into hell” began when he met a “pseudo-coach” who provided him with substances. Soon after, he won his first bodybuilding competition in 2012.

“That encouraged him to continue with full force. He wanted to be the best, that was all he had in mind. It was an obsession, as if he had been brainwashed,” says Jasmin Nadeau, who was worried about his brother’s steroid use.

But in his second competition a few months later, Louis-Philippe was not able to place, which badly affected his morale.

“TIME BOMB”

The young man then succumbed to binge eating and began to overeat without respecting the diet he had given himself. In a matter of weeks, he reportedly gained over 30 pounds.

According to coroner Louise Nolet, this overeating while using steroids — which have negative effects on blood pressure and cholesterol in particular — played a role in his death.

“We knew he was putting his health at risk, it was a time bomb. But we never thought he would die so suddenly,” his brother sighs.
