The Democratic congresswoman from Oregon is recovering from a concussion after she and her husband were hit by a car while crossing the street at a crosswalk in crime-ridden Portland

  • MP Suzanne Bonamici and her husband, the district judge, were hit by a car
  • They walked across a crosswalk Friday after an event in Oregon
  • The progressive lawmaker was treated for a concussion and laceration to the head
  • US District Judge Michael H. Simon had ‘minor injuries’

Oregon Representative Suzanne Bonamici and her husband were hit by a car while crossing a crosswalk after an event in Portland on Friday.

The Democratic congresswoman is recovering at home from a concussion and was treated for a head laceration, according to a series of tweets posted by Bonamici’s communications director Natalie Crofts on Saturday.

U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon, Bonamici’s husband, was also treated for “minor injuries.”

No arrests were made. The driver hit the couple near downtown at slow speed and cooperated with the police.

Portland is notoriously a progressive enclave that has favored a city rampant with homelessness and crime in recent years. Amid the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020, Seattle’s citizens took the lead and created an “autonomous zone.”

Bonamici has represented Oregon’s deeply secure Democratic 1st congressional district since 2012. She earned a sixth term at the November Midterms, winning by 36 points. President Joe Biden won the county, which includes Portland, by a whopping 61.3 percentage points in the 2020 presidential election.

“Rep Bonamici and her husband were hit by a car while crossing a street at a crosswalk on Friday night,” Crofts explained in her three-tweet thread on Saturday.

“The incident happened as they were leaving an event in Portland,” she continued. “She was treated for a concussion and laceration to the head. He was treated for minor injuries. She was discharged from the hospital to recover at home.’

“The Congresswoman is expected to make a full recovery but will be unable to attend today’s town hall meetings in Clatsop and Tillamook Counties and other public events while she heals.”

Bonamici is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a member of the Education and Workforce Committee. She also chaired the Subcommittee of the Panel on Civil Rights and Human Services at the 117th Congress.

Her Friday event, just before she was hit by a car, included meetings with students and staff at higher education institutions to address food insecurity and barriers that prevent students from accessing healthy food.

“It is clear that our existing food aid programs are not reaching every student struggling with hunger,” Bonamici tweeted Friday. “My Opportunity to Address College Hunger Act would help address a common barrier, but we also need to do more to fill the gaps in our federal nutrition programs.”

Portland has become increasingly unsafe in recent years.

An October poll by The Oregonian/OregonLive/DHM Research found that just a third of residents say they feel safe in downtown Portland during the day. That number dropped to just one in seven at night.

Bonamici was first elected to the House of Representatives after winning a special election in 2012 to replace Democrat David Wu, who resigned after allegations of sexual advances.
