The opposition party of the city of Laval is calling for the illegal resignation of a councilor who does not live in the Laval area.

According to TVA Nouvelles, Seta Topouzian, elected in the Renaud sector in Laval, claims to live in the unit of a condominium that she owns on Boulevard Dagenais.

However, according to the opposition’s claims, Ms Topouzian’s main residence is in Blainville.

A resident of the neighborhood where the elected official’s apartment is located told our journalist that it was an elderly woman who lived alone in the accommodation.
Ms. Topouzian said she was unable to answer questions at this time because “a legal opinion is in progress.”
Support from the mayor
The mayor of Laval, Stéphane Boyer, nevertheless reiterated his trust in the municipal council.

“I am convinced that Ms. Topouzian has her heart in the right place,” he told the council last week. It exists to serve its citizens. She has lived in Laval for a very long time and it is not illegal to own two properties.”
The mayor pointed out that if the elected official’s second home had been in a more remote area, “no one would ask questions and assume, ‘Well, it’s a chalet, that’s right’.”

However, Achille Cifelli, the leader of the Action Laval party, continues to demand confirmation that Ms. Topouzian actually lives in the Laval area.
“Show us the proof and it’s over,” he said in an interview.
A message from the mayor’s office received Tuesday evening said: “Official documents confirm that she actually lives in Laval.”

The law requires a candidate to have lived in the city continuously for the 12 months leading up to the Sept. 1 general election.
The Laval party has filed a complaint with the Quebec Municipal Commission demanding Ms. Topouzian’s resignation.
