A new Ukrainian counter-offensive seems to be emerging in the east of the country. According to Ukrainian military officials reported by AFP, the frontline is advancing further towards the separatist areas, two months after an initial operation that allowed Kyiv to regain control of several hundred locations in the Kharkov region. However, a quarter of the Russian forces present on Ukrainian territory remain stationed near Kherson in the south of the country. Citing the risk of an attack in the region, pro-Russian authorities have evacuated tens of thousands of civilians in recent weeks. “The Russians will turn Kherson into a kind of Stalingrad on the Niepr. Everyone is expecting this battle,” notes Michel Goya, former colonel in the naval troops. This historian, a specialist in strategic issues, was heard by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces this Wednesday, November 2nd.
