On Tuesday, February 20, a Russian court rejected the appeal of American journalist Evan Gershkovich, who challenged the extension of his pre-trial detention until the end of March on charges of “espionage.” “Gershkovich was arrested in March 2023 and will remain in custody until March 30, 2024,” the press service of the Moscow courts wrote on Telegram.
The 32-year-old journalist appeared in court on Friday in a glass cage reserved for prisoners and was wearing a dark sweater. Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who also worked for the AFP in Moscow in the past, was arrested by the Russian Secret Service (FSB) almost a year ago while reporting in Yekaterinburg in the Urals in March 2023.
He is accused of espionage, a crime punishable by 20 years in prison, but he denies these accusations, as does the United States, his newspaper, his relatives and his family. Russia has never substantiated its allegations or publicly provided evidence, and the entire process was classified.
