We have more and more details about the next Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2: After the design, it’s now the turn of the operation. Unfortunately, everything points to the next SmartTag’s system being as closed as Apple’s with its AirTag.

There is currently no standard for connected fobs, i.e. no universal system for detecting lost fobs on every smartphone. And that applies in an even more pernicious sense: there is no system that works on all phones, making it impossible to prevent tracking. At first glance, Samsung would be no exception to the rule with the Galaxy SmartTag 2, its second connected key fob. While we thought it would be announced at the same time as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, it seems we’ll have to wait.
SmartThings Find and nothing else for the SmartTag 2?
As reported by 9to5Google, retail site MobileFun has published a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2 sales page. . If you don’t know where your keys are, just look it up in the SmartThing app to find them easily, quickly and efficiently. »

This corresponds to Apple’s Find My app for AirTags and Google’s Find My Device network. It is said to be compatible with all Android and Apple devices: In addition, for a few weeks now, the Locate application on Android has been able to detect if you are being tracked by an AirTag.
However, this would not be the case on the Samsung side. In fact, the brand does not appear to be promoting this network on the published sales page. That means if you lose your keys, they can only be located if a Samsung smartphone comes by. Which drastically reduces the chances of finding them.
What we know about the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag 2
It is official that the tracer was certified by the FCC, the American commission responsible for communications, at the end of July. It should be noted that the device uses both Bluetooth Low Energy and Ultra Wideband: the latter allows for more accurate positioning. A technology already found in the SmartTag+, an evolution of the first SmartTag of that name.

Another big change: the design. No more small black or white plastic square. Same colors but here the Galaxy SmartTag 2 would be in the shape of a flat pill with a large hole at the top to attach the key ring. Compared to the launch date, there is currently none: FCC certification indicates that all certified information may be released on January 27, 2024. We can expect Samsung to launch its plotter just before that date.
