The challenge, launched in April, targets species classified as Critically Endangered, Critically Endangered, Vulnerable or Extinct in the Wild on the IUCN Red List. The 52 candidates, selected from nearly 200 preliminary applications, presented detailed projects that promised to have a lasting impact on the survival of an endangered species. The final selection of the million-dollar scholarship lies in the hands of a jury of international specialists.

The challenge reflects great geographical and biological diversity. Among the applications are projects to protect 7 amphibians, 17 birds, 3 fish, 3 insects, 12 mammals and 10 reptiles.
“Reverse the Red”: An innovative concept
The initiative is inspired by the IUCN's “Reverse the Red” concept, which aims to improve the status of Red List species. For example, reclassifying a species from “extinct in the wild” to “critically endangered” represents significant progress.
Future outlook and winner announcement
The winner of the challenge will have five years to implement their program, with a progress report expected. The zoo will announce the winner in spring 2024. This marks an important milestone in the global fight for species protection.
