The Seahawks continued to hammer defensive positions of need in the NFL draft, selecting Ohio State edge rusher Tyreke Smith 158th overall, their second pick of the fifth round on Saturday.
Seahawks Draft Breakdown: Take a close look at all nine picks
Smith joins Boye Mafe, one of Seattle’s two second-round picks, as rookies who will be fighting for time in the Seahawks’ passing frenzy.
Smith, a 6-foot-3, 264-pound senior from the Buckeyes, had three sacks, 26 total tackles, two passes defended and one forced fumble in 2021.
He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.86 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine this spring.
“Resilient, long-limbed fullback whose unbridled attacking style brings ups and downs in every game,” draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote of Smith on his NFL.com profile.
Zierlein added that in order to become a “functional edger,” Smith needs to fill out the bottom half of his frame.
Smith was named a 2020 All-Big Ten pick and a second-team All-Conference last year.
