The slide of the right in Ecuador and the selectivity of the media

The candidate for vice president of the Civil Revolution (RC), Andrés Arauz, said in an interview with the Radio Pichincha station that the country’s risk “improved” a day after the assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio, an indicator that measures trust in investments.

This is because their chances of winning in the first round have decreased as they would blame the RC for the crime and therefore “the probability that the bonds will be repaid is high and therefore the country risk decreases”, explained Arauz.

The statement of the vice president of the executive candidate Luisa González became trending on social networks this Saturday, and the majority of the media amplified and distorted it.

Aside from Arauz’s statement, the truth is that the risk to the country has decreased, despite the attack on the presidential candidate on August 9th, in which it would have been logical to shoot him.

The RC representative later argued on his X account, formerly Twitter, that bankers profited and made millions when bond prices rose on August 10.

“It is time for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is involved in the investigation, to reveal who bought bonds in the days before the murder,” said the economist, who is also an economist.

Meanwhile, the press and practically no one on virtual platforms repeated the complaint that Luisa González would be the victim of an attack, as an inmate confessed to the prosecutor’s office.

Neither are the proposals of the vice-presidential candidate Verónica Abad, who wants to reach the Carondelet Palace – seat of the government – under the leadership of Daniel Noboa of the National Democratic Action (ADN) alliance.

The silence of the media is evident while videos of Abad’s statements are circulating in which he talks about de-dollarization, the return to the standard of another currency, the privatization of health and education, about how mothers should earn less, about the non-existence of gender-based violence . among other things, about the ugliness of women.

Noboa also proposed dissolving the Secretariat of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (Senescyt) and attaching it to the Ministry of Health to address the shortage of doctors, although the mission of each institution is different.

This is the scenario in Ecuador a month before the elections, when González and Noboa face each other with two different and contradictory government projects.

Even though the balance is currently trending to the right, analysts believe it is still premature to predict the outcome of the upcoming runoff election on October 15th, as the official election campaign has not even started yet, which will take place on September 24th.
