“The Snow Society” is one of the 15 finalists for the Oscar for Best International Film

The Snow Society, one of Netflix's strongest bets for awards season, has made it to the 15 finalists or pre-nominees for Best International Film, Best Visual Effects, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Soundtrack. The drama, which follows the Uruguayan Fairchild rugby team's accident in the Andes in 1972, will face stiff competition. Also on the list are the English work “The Zone of Interest” by Jonathan Glazer (albeit in German, as it is set in the Auschwitz concentration camp), the Finnish “Fallen Leaves” by the master Aki Kaurismäki and the rest of the favorites: the French Simmer; the Italian I, captain; the Icelandic Godland; the Danish The Promised Land; the Mexican Totem by Lila Avilés, the German teacher's room; the Ukrainian 20 Days in Mariupol (which also includes the documentary screening) and the Japanese Perfect Days by the German Wim Wenders.

A total of around 15 international films made it into the nomination vote. Academy members will determine the final list of five titles between January 11th and 16th. The nominees will be announced on January 23rd. Also in the fight for sneak-in will be the Armenian Amerikatsi The Monk And The Gun from Bhutan (second film by filmmaker Pawo Choyning Dorji, who was already nominated with his Lunana, a yak at school, and was included in the 2022 gala). Chilean Maite Alberdi's latest documentary, Infinite Memory, stands out among the finalists in this category. In the case of the Netflix series “American Symphony,” the protagonist is musician Jon Batiste, winner of five Grammy Awards and produced by the Obamas. It also appears in the shortlisted films “Beyond Utopia,” which consists of the testimonies of several families who managed to escape the North Korean regime, and “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” about the fight against Parkinson and the professional career of the protagonist of “Back”. into the future.

Barbie begins to show the strength she showed in the Golden Globe nominations, where she reached nine, tying Bob Fosse's record with Cabaret. In the “Visual Effects” section, there are ten films that made the first cut. One of the big favorites is the Japanese film Godzilla: Minus One, a new take on the monster that has captivated generations of viewers. Ridley Scott's “Napoleon”, which lost the battle against the critics, is one of the contenders for the nomination. There's also Zack Snyder's attempt to create his own space saga, Rebel Moon. Part 1: The Girl of Fire or the third part of The Guardians of the Galaxy from the Marvel Universe.

Preselection of animation functions

When it comes to animation, a selection was made two weeks ago. In this category, a list of 30 animated features was announced that were considered already preselected, including three Spanish ones: Robot Dreams, They Shot the Pianist and Unicorn Wars.

The Oscars will take place on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. They will be broadcast on ABC and the ceremony will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel. It's his fourth time leading the gala and second in a row. The 2024 ceremony will air one hour before the 2023 ceremony starting at 4:00 p.m. local time.
