The mother, Joyce Curtis, did not hear from her son Nicholas for more than a decade until the boy was hospitalized in Paris in 2010 after hitchhiking between France and Spain.

At this point she had tried to take him home wanted to go to him with her husband and send him money for the return trip, but the boy had not boarded the booked plane after his release and had lost sight of him again.
The mother did not hear from him for another twelve years as she believed he was dead, also in the face of the Covid pandemic.
However, on December 19, he received an unexpected phone call informed her that Nicholas was alive and back in the hospital, this time in the south of France.
“I can not believe it. I thought he died between Covid and everything that happened. I suffered for him,” she told the Mirror, adding, “When I got the call I was shocked. I just cried all day. The call made Christmas special for me, especially since my husband passed away in June.”
“I’ve come to terms with the fact that he’s dead. I really thought so and I think everyone thought the same,” revealed the woman, who now plans to hug her son again.
“I spoke to him on the phone. Appears to be in good health. I asked him, ‘Are you coming home, Nikky?’ And he said, “Yes.” I can’t imagine what he went through. I have to take him home. Only then will I be completely happy,” the woman concluded.
