A dramatic and heated match was witnessed at the Iván Elías Moreno Stadium, where Universitario de Deportes returned after beating Deportivo Municipal 2-1 on matchday 12 of the Apertura tournament. Those led by Jorge Fossati found themselves rowing against the tide from the 10th minute as Sebastian Jaurena seemed to put the score in the councillors’ favor after an assist from Christopher Olivares. The Creams didn’t give up, however, and relied on their forwards’ quality of shots on goal.

Alex Valera equalized after 25 minutes after taking advantage of a Nelson Cabanillas corner kick to head past Steven Rivadeneyra’s goal. Ate’s team took the lead after 54 minutes thanks to Emanuel Herrera. The ‘tanque’ entered the mayor’s area and after receiving a pass from Valera, went hand in hand with the goalkeeper to define calmly. The closing stages of the game were heartbreaking as Ángel Comizzo’s team started into the cream of the earth in hopes of an equaliser.

Although Deportivo Municipal was very close to scoring the second goal, José Carvallo showed all his experience and was responsible for repelling all shots that reached the goal. As if that wasn’t enough, Alex Valera was sent off after his second yellow card in added time. However, the councilors could not avoid defeat to a rival unstoppable in local competition. This result keeps Universitario in second place in the Apertura tournament, two points behind Alianza Lima, who have a game in hand.

“I think our big deficit was in the air game and Municipal, who also had their arguments, took advantage of it. It’s a team that plays well and worked well, so I really appreciate this win,” Fossati said after the game.
