Stanford women’s soccer star Katie Mayer has died, the school said Wednesday.
Mayer, who turned 22 in January, was a major in international relations with a minor in history. The school mentioned death at the university’s residence on Tuesday, but did not give a name until the family was notified.
There is currently no cause of death.

Stanford says there are advisory staff on site at her residence and they have also worked with student athletes. Mayer has one older sister and one younger sister.
“Katie was extremely committed to everything and everyone in her world,” Stanford Vice Vice President of Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole and Athletics Director Bernard Muir said in a letter to the community.
“Her friends describe her as a team player bigger than life in all her pursuits, from choosing an academic discipline, which she said changed ‘my view of the world and the very important challenges we must work together to overcome. “She brought passion to the Cardinal’s football program for women and to women’s sport in general. Fierce racing, Katie made two critical saves in penalties against North Carolina to help Stanford win her third National Women’s Football Championship in 2019. Katie was a bright light for so many on the field and in our community. “

Mayer’s most memorable moment came in 2019, when she saved a penalty during the NCAA Women’s Football Championship. After making the rescue, Mayer had a holiday for centuries that appeared on social media.
Stanford and North Carolina were tied 0-0 at the end of the regulation in both overtimes. Meyer saved the first penalty attempt from Tar Hills and later made a second save when 4-4 was tied. Chiara Pickett scored the next blow to give Stanford a 5-4 victory over North Carolina and the third title in the program.
