The Sunday Brunch cocktail expert is left red-faced after telling singer Lemar it has “a pretty spicy edge” after praising her cucumber margarita

A cocktail expert at Sunday brunch was left red-faced after telling singer Lemar: “You've got quite a spicy edge” when he complimented her on her cucumber margarita.

Cocktail inventor Portia Freeman joined presenters Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer on Channel 4's Sunday show to prepare three boozy mixed drinks for the famous guests.

Starting with her take on a Bloody Mary, called the Smoky Bloody Caeser, Portia then introduced her second cocktail – a cucumber margarita.

Lemar said the drink was a hit for him, to which Portia said, “You've got quite a spicy edge too.”

She immediately seemed concerned about what she had said and the guests burst into laughter, but despite attempts to move the conversation forward, Portia was visibly embarrassed.

“This is a palate cleanser,” Portia explained as she introduced the mezcal drink.

“You want everything to just be a compensation and a compliment.”

Simon said: “That's nice, isn't it,” before Tim Lemar asked his opinion on the cocktail.

“Yeah, that’s a win for me so far,” Lemar replied, causing Portia to make the faux pas.

After saying “Pizza Rim,” Portia buried her head in her hands and paced around the studio kitchen.

“The side dish is um, you have a very spicy one,” Portia said, trying to steer the discussion away from the edges when Tim interrupted her and said, “Stop it.”

The 60-year-old celebrity chef announced on social media that he was closing one of his Greens restaurants in Didsbury, Greater Manchester, after landlords increased his rent by more than a third and costs made the business “unviable”.

Rimmer opened the restaurant 33 years ago with his business partner Simon Connolly and promoted it with the slogan: “Terrifying carnivores since 1990”.

The news was met with dismay after he posted a video message with the grim news on X, formerly Twitter, as well as Instagram.

The Simons, as they call themselves, opened another Greens restaurant in Sale, Greater Manchester in July 2022, which remains open.

The menu consists of a mix of small and large dishes, with the cheapest dish being the vegetarian black pudding at £4.50 and the most expensive dish being the falafel burger at £14.50.

In the video message, Rimmer said: “This is a very sad day.” After 33 years at the helm of the Green Party in Didsbury, we have unfortunately had to close the door.

“Our landlords have increased our rent by around 35 percent, the cost of raw materials, the cost of heat, light and electricity, the cost of employing staff and general food costs have unfortunately meant that the company is no longer profitable. “

“Unfortunately, we have closed the door with immediate effect. It's a heartbreaking day.

“I want to thank every single employee who has worked for us over the years, every single customer who has walked through the door, our amazing suppliers, our neighbors, our friends and everyone who has ever set foot in the door. “.

“I can’t believe I’m actually making this message.” Big love. Thank you for the last 33 years – and hopefully we’ll see you in Sale, if not here. Much love.'

Comedian and Love Island narrator Iain Stirling was among those who lamented the restaurant's closure.

He wrote to Rimmer on

Fellow comedian Russell Kane added: “Nooooooooo!!! Tell me Sale is safe!!!'

Masterchef 2015 finalist Tony Rodd, who also announced the closure of his own restaurant today, wrote in solidarity: “I'm so sorry boss.” We did the same today.

“It's a terrible situation we're all in through no fault of our own. 'Stay strong for yourself and the team.'
