After a Blockbuster report that revealed that Marvel not only fired all of Daredevil: Born Again’s writers and directors and essentially started over, they also rethought their entire approach to television. Fewer miniseries and more ongoing shows. Actual “creative passes” from start to finish that didn’t seem necessary before.
If these reports are true, we may have dodged a bullet with the return of Daredevil. At first, the plan for Daredevil actually sounded kind of interesting. It would be a little more down-to-earth if Matt worked as a lawyer and took on actual cases while Kingpin dealt with the problems of rule as the city’s mayor. But then, depending on the situation, the two of them would be “pulled back into their old lives.”
A Daredevil legal drama sounds like it has potential (I mean, people like legal dramas for a reason, and you could always have some bloody fights), but Daredevil reportedly doesn’t have his costume until Episode 4 worn in the series, which seems… strange.
But beyond that, many film insiders have only hinted at the reason for this or simply said it outright. Even though this may no longer be the case, you can still consider it spoiler if they still go in that direction. Hopefully they don’t do that.

The reason Matt abandons his Daredevil shoot is because Foggy and Karen are shot and either killed or seriously injured early in the show – off-screen. These would be his co-leads, played by Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll. It was always strange that the two didn’t return for the series and other supporting roles like Fisk’s love interest Vanessa were recast.
Needless to say, killing off two of the main characters from the popular original series, off-screen, to make Matt give up crime-fighting for a while would have been a terrible opening. Hopefully this draft of the script gets thrown in the trash and they find a way to bring Karen and Foggy back, which of course they should.
The conspiracy behind all of this is that Disney was trying to bring “a Disney” here, a ploy where they rename a show in order to reset the compensation to season one levels. They’ve done this with children’s shows in the past, but by producing Daredevil’s “Born Again” instead of the fourth season and not bringing back old cast members who might command higher prices, the whole thing may have been an elaborate cost-cutting exercise.
Wilson Fisk, Vincent D’Onofrio, has dismissed the drama, saying that such things happen and he would have been even more disappointed if they had caused something bad. Reportedly, Daredevil: Born Again will have two seasons of nine episodes each, and that plan hasn’t changed. However, it would be a departure from all other Marvel series, as Loki is the only live-action series to have received an official second season so far.
But going back to the drawing board at this point will undoubtedly result in a lot of delays and we have no idea when this series will be released. The general plan looks like it’s about making TV shows that actually feel like TV shows, rather than miniseries setups for movies or crossovers. So we’ll see how that goes.
