Trump was US president from 2017 to 2020 and is the Republican Party's favorite to face Joe Biden in November's presidential election. His defense wants the case to be judged only after the plea.

Three of the nine Supreme Court justices were appointed by Trumpwhich guarantees a 63 conservative majority on the court.

The defense claimed that Trump was president at the time and was therefore entitled to legal protections, such as prevention of criminal prosecution.

But prosecutors argued that he acted as a candidate, not president, when he pressured officials to try to change the election results.

US elections: Understanding processes that could impact Trump's candidacy

After Democrat Joe Biden was elected president of the United States in 2020, Trump publicly asserted for weeks that he was indeed the one who won. On January 6, 2021, he encouraged a crowd to go to the Capitol as Biden's election was officially announced.

However, in early February, judges on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected the request. The trial in this case was scheduled for March this year, but the judges decided to postpone it and have not yet set a new date.
