The teaching profession has become almost impossible –

I had the opportunity to write it, I'm still not in favor of the teachers' strike.

It seems to me that the state of public finances is critical, and the current generation of students has paid the price of the pandemic sufficiently so that their educational progress will not be further delayed.

However, I think it is important to dispel the myth that teachers complain when their stomachs are full.

collapse

We underestimate the extent to which this profession has become untenable, to the extent that society has transferred all of its deficient functions to schools.

Let me explain: In a normal society, basically the family educates and the school teaches. The family socializes, instills core values and the school instills knowledge, knowledge and a general culture on this shared sociological background before preparing for the job market.

In school, the teacher's authority was generally unchallenged, although there were always troublemakers in every class. He had the right to exclude her from his class. It was even a given and the parents stood by the teacher if it did happen.

The least we can say is that we have changed worlds.

The family has already collapsed. It is torn, it no longer has the coherence and solidity it once had.

And too many parents unconditionally defend their children when they misbehave and turn against teachers and professors who should have no right to doubt their children's genius.

The younger generation is paying the price for this rejection. Pharmacopoeia-regulated behavioral disorders are on the rise, as are learning disorders, in a context where the presence of screens impairs the ability to concentrate.

And that without forgetting that in the name of inclusion we have forced the integration of students with learning difficulties and behavior problems into regular lessons. Which made the teachers' lives even more complicated.

In the end, we simply lost the sense of the school's mission.

Can we rebuild the school? Can we refocus it on its fundamental mission?

This is what the Minister of National Education, Gabriel Attal, is trying to achieve in France. This is what Jean Garon and Michèle Courchesne tried to do here in the 1990s and then in the 2000s.

Drainville

This is obviously what Bernard Drainville wants to do, who, contrary to what his critics claim, is the best education minister we could ask for.

But that doesn't happen with a magic wand. The Minister's focus on academic excellence is a step in the right direction.

The same applies to the reform of teacher training.

But make no mistake: If school is sick, it is because society is sick. And no one really wants to admit that.
