The terror on this side of The Other Side

The terror on this side of “The Other Side”

There’s nothing like looking to the other side to scare yourself. This applies to many aspects of life, but in this case I am referring to the supernatural. The Other Side is the latest series by Berto Romero, the first two chapters of which can be seen on Movistar Plus+ since last Thursday. While enjoying the adventures of Nacho Nieto, the old-school paranormal investigator played by Berto himself, I was strongly reminded of Terele Pávez’s line in The Witches of Zugarramurdi: “I’m not afraid of witches, I am. “ “Sons of bitches are scary.”

The series is not about the fear of ghosts in the home, but about the presence of other types of ghosts on television and in life. There is Gorka Romero (Nacho Vigalondo), our protagonist’s great nemesis, a self-satisfied television star, Nacho’s former partner, who eschewed rigor and embraced sensationalism as the key to fame. And a whole environment of fans of the genre, where there is everything. Only ghosts in the building.

Mystery journalism isn’t much different from any other, and that’s exactly what The Other Side is all about. From the media and their believers. About how social discontent is exploited through conspiracy, about all those people who at least say without a blush: “You won’t see that in the media.” Openly accepting a crazy conspiracy does not mean having a critical mind. And yet another frightening presence: failure. To round out the piece we have Buenafuente in the role of the ghost of Nieto’s mentor, one of the funniest characters on television in recent times, and some wonderful Eva Ugarte and María Botto. If he were still on this side, Terele Pávez could come out.
