The theft of headphones that ended in a double kidnapping

New generation headphones were central to a police operation in which 14 people were arrested, two kidnappings took place in the Málaga municipalities of Fuengirola and Benalmádena and a robbery at a luxury villa in Mijas. The theft of the electronic device and cash from the tenants of the Mijas residence, French tourists, was the trigger for them to take the law into their own hands and ultimately be arrested because they were accused of being responsible for the crimes of his detention, illegal, robbery with violence and intimidation, membership in a criminal organization, house burglary and injuries. Both she and one of the kidnapped victims, who was also arrested, were provisionally released.

The bizarre story begins on September 9th at an exclusive residence in Marbella where 13 French tourists stayed for a price of 4,000 euros per month. That day, they discovered that someone had stolen cash, jewelry and various technological devices, including headphones. Two days later, they were connected and their location was displayed in their owner’s mobile phone application thanks to GPS technology. Instead of reporting the theft, the group of visitors decided to go to the location indicated on the map to retrieve it. To the brave.

When they arrived they saw that it was a house in Benalmádena. Around 11 a.m. on September 11, they tracked down who they believed had robbed them. It was a man, also French, whom they took away with great force, and so they managed to get the information they were looking for: he told them that he had only bought the headphones from one person from whom he had received them gave his information and his possible whereabouts in a bar he used to frequent in Fuengirola.

The gang went to the location where, hours later, they managed to find the alleged seller on the afternoon of the same day, the 11th. They used the same procedure: they forced him to accompany them and put him in a vehicle. That’s when state police received a call alerting them to the possible kidnapping of a man. Several patrol cars in the area quickly made their way to the scene and officers were able to free the victim. They also managed to capture nine of their captors, although four of them managed to escape in a vehicle en route to Marbella. Thanks to its license plate, the car was soon located and intercepted in the Puerto Banús area by the local police of Marbella, who then arrested four other people.

The group specializing in kidnappings from the Drugs and Organized Crime Unit (Udyco) of the National Police in Malaga took over the case together with the same unit from the Fuengirola police station, which began the investigation to resolve the matter, called Operation Brinco. They also searched the detainees’ homes and found clothing, 13 cell phones and 25 watches, most of them imitation luxury brands. Four vehicles used in the kidnappings were also confiscated. All high quality, except for one that was stolen from the victim of the first kidnapping.

Police eventually arrested the group of 13 tourists who are allegedly responsible for the crimes of illegal detention, robbery with violence and intimidation, membership in a criminal organization, house burglary and injuries. The victim of the second kidnapping was also arrested for robbery. After the 14 people were taken to court, they were provisionally released.
